This ebook about imaging for foot and ankle pain provides a look at how different imaging modalities, such as X-ray, CT, MRI, and ultrasound, can help diagnose conditions. It will also explore the advantages and disadvantages of each technique while providing guidance on which type of imaging is best for each condition.
X-ray and CT:
X-ray and CT both use ionising radiation to create images of the bony structures in the foot and ankle. They are helpful for detecting fractures, deformity and arthritis that may be causing pain or limited movement. X-ray has relatively low resolution while CT offers much higher resolution giving much more detailed pictures.
Ultrasound:
Ultrasound (US) uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the inside of the foot and ankle problems. Ultrasound images can help diagnose the cause of foot and ankle pain. US guidance directs steroid injections or platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatments for more accurate placement of the treatment.
MRI:
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a powerful tool for imaging the foot and ankle producing detailed images of soft tissues and bones without the use of radiation.
MRI detects ligament or tendon tears, joint abnormalities such as arthritis, bone bruising as well as cartilage damage or other soft tissue injuries.
